I am honored to have been invited to MC at the “Blame it On Rio” Benefit show, August 19th at the White Owl Social Club! Rio is a second-generation tattooer, who in addition to marking thousands of people over the last 40+ years, taught a large number of people to tattoo as well, in his various studios, and most recently at the Oregon School Of Tattoo Arts. For those unable to make the event, donations may also be made to his online fundraising page here. If you’d like to follow the event on Facebook, the fan page for the event is here.
Most tattooers don’t get the things that people who work regular jobs get, mainly health insurance. So, when they get sick, they get something that hinges completely on the success they’ve achieved as artists, but more importantly with the connections they’ve made among their peers and clients who rally to help them when they are in need. It’s a big deal for me to be involved with helping out Rio, who started tattooing in 1961, and has been hugely influential for many artists who got their start learning from him. The owner of the shop I work at, and two of my coworkers learned under Rio, and thanks to the incredible atmosphere where I work, my own career has benefited immensely from their knowledge and support. Without Rio, I also would not have been able to be in a place to write my book “Mommy’s New Tattoo”, which features former Rio students Ximena Quiroz and Katie Williams.
I’ll be hosting the evening’s festivities, and donating artwork to the auction, including the design that became the t-shirt for the event. I hope that anyone who reads this will consider donating to his FundRazr, or coming out for a great night of music and celebrating.
